What Is the New Mexico Unemployment Calculator?

The New Mexico Unemployment Calculator is an online tool designed to help workers estimate unemployment insurance benefits before filing a claim.

It uses your base period wages—the money you earned during specific quarters before your claim date—to calculate:

  • Your weekly benefit amount (WBA)
  • The maximum total benefits you could receive
  • The estimated duration of your claim (in weeks)
  • Which base period (standard or alternate) is applied

Important Note: The calculator gives an estimate. The New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions will review your actual wages and determine your official benefit amount after you file a claim.

How the Calculator Works

Here’s a breakdown of the process:

  1. Enter Your Claim Start Date
The tool uses this date to figure out your base period. A base period is usually the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before your claim begins.
  2. Enter Your Wages by Quarter
You’ll input the wages you earned in each of the four quarters shown. The calculator automatically adjusts the labels so you know exactly which months to include.
  3. Calculate Your Estimate
Once you click “Calculate Estimate,” the tool runs a check:
    • It looks at your highest earning quarter.
    • It compares your total wages against eligibility rules.
    • It applies New Mexico’s formulas to find your weekly benefit and maximum claim length.
  4. See Your Results
    The calculator shows:
    • Weekly Benefit Amount (WBA): Between $102 (minimum) and $615 (maximum) per week.
    • Total Benefit Amount: Usually up to ½ of your total base period wages, but not more than 26 weeks of WBA.
    • Duration: Up to 26 weeks, depending on your earnings.
    • Base Period Used: Standard or alternate (if standard doesn’t qualify).

Example Calculation

Let’s say you earned:

  • Quarter 1: $7,000
  • Quarter 2: $7,500
  • Quarter 3: $7,200
  • Quarter 4: $7,800

Your highest quarter is $7,800. Dividing this by 26 gives a weekly benefit of about $300.

  • Weekly Benefit: $300 (approx.)
  • Maximum Benefit: $7,800 (26 × $300)
  • Duration: 26 weeks

This is a simplified example. Your results may differ depending on your exact wages and eligibility.

Why Use the Calculator?

The New Mexico Unemployment Calculator gives you:

  • Clarity before filing – Know what to expect before submitting your claim.
  • Faster financial planning – Understand how much money you may receive each week.
  • Confidence – If you’re not sure you’ll qualify, the calculator can help you check before applying.

Things to Keep in Mind

  • The calculator provides estimates only. Your official benefits come from DWS.
  • If your wages don’t qualify under the standard base period, the tool may prompt you to use the alternate base period.
  • If you see “Ineligible,” it may mean your wages don’t meet the minimum requirements.
